About 14,000 babies are born each year with Sickle Cell Disease in Ghana.
Sickle cell disease affects one in fifty births in Ghana. This means that about 14,000 babies are born each year with sickle cell disease in Ghana. Of the record number of 2,400 babies born on New Year’s day in 2018 in Ghana; 48 would have been born with sickle cell disease without their parents knowing about it because we don’t have a national program for screening for the disease.
Kidney disease and diabetes is a research theme of WAGMC. Research in this area is currently focused on kidney disease in the H3Africa Kidney Disease Research Network. Its primary goal is to conduct genomics, clinical and translational research on the most prevalent forms of chronic kidney disease (CKD), expand and support a well-trained cadre of African researchers and physician scientists to conduct CKD research according to regional priorities.
It is estimated more than 500,000 individuals lose their lives to end stage renal disease annually in sub-Saharan Africa.
